How to Read Crystal and Oscillator Markings — 16.000MHz · ppm · load capacitance (CL), ABM8 · ASFL1 part numbers

A customer holding a 2-lead crystal and a 4-pad oscillator asks whether they can be swapped, and a female clerk answers that the oscillator is a powered chip

Figure description: At the counter of an electronic-parts shop, a customer holds a silver 2-lead crystal (16.000) in one hand and a square oscillator (16.000) with 4 pads on the bottom in the other, asking, “They’re both 16MHz, so I can swap them, right?” A female clerk in a red apron points at the oscillator, shakes her head and answers, “The oscillator is a chip that needs power! The pin count is different, too.”

A crystal (quartz resonator) and an oscillator (crystal oscillator) both have the frequency printed on the body, like 16.000, so they look like the same part. But a crystal is a 2-terminal part that you attach to a microcontroller’s oscillator circuit, while an oscillator is a chip that outputs a clock on its own once powered. Besides the frequency, the ordering part number carries letters for ppm (tolerance), load capacitance and temperature.

All values were checked against Abracon datasheets (ABM8 · ABM3 · ABLS · AB26T · ASFL1 · ASCO). Click a part number to find stock in eGuro Part Search.

1. Crystals and oscillators are different parts

A crystal has 2 leads, no power and needs load capacitance; an oscillator has 4 pads (1 Tri-state, 2 GND, 3 Output, 4 Vdd) and a 3.3V supply

CrystalOscillator
What it doesResonates when attached to an MCU oscillator circuitOutputs a clock signal on its own
PowerNoneYes (ASFL1: 2.97~3.63V)
Terminals2 (frequency terminals)4: Tri-state · GND · Output · Vdd
Must check when orderingLoad capacitance (CL)Supply voltage · output

The Abracon ASFL1 oscillator has pad 1 Tri-state (disable), pad 2 GND, pad 3 output and pad 4 supply (Vdd), and runs at 3.3V. If you drop an oscillator into a crystal’s footprint, or the other way round, the circuit won’t work. Even with the same frequency, these parts are not interchangeable.

2. Body marking — 16.000 means MHz

Marking exampleMeaning
16.00016.000MHz — often printed to three decimal places
14.3181814.31818MHz (frequency example in the ABLS · ASFL1 datasheets)
32.76832.768kHz — for clocks (AB26T); the unit is kHz

The number on the body is usually the frequency in MHz. However, 32.768 for clocks and RTCs is in kHz, so don’t mix up the units. The logo and date code printed on the body differ by manufacturer, so confirm the exact part number on the packaging label or in that manufacturer’s datasheet.

3. ppm — tolerance and stability

How to Read Crystal and Oscillator Markings · ppm
ppm = parts per million
16MHz × 20ppm = 16,000,000 × 20 ÷ 1,000,000 = 320Hz
TermDatasheet nameMeaning
ToleranceFrequency Tolerance @+25°CHow far the frequency may deviate at 25℃
StabilityFrequency StabilityHow far it may deviate over the whole operating temperature range
AgingAgingChange during the first year (ABM8 ±2ppm)
ABM8 standard: tolerance ±50ppm · stability ±50ppm (−10~60℃)

ppm (parts per million) means one millionth. A 16MHz crystal rated ±20ppm can deviate by up to 16,000,000 × 20 ÷ 1,000,000 = ±320Hz. Frequency tolerance is the value at 25℃, while frequency stability is the value over the whole operating temperature range, so the two are different. Circuits that need an accurate frequency, such as communications and USB, use parts with smaller (more precise) numbers.

A customer holding a bag labeled 16.000MHz ±20ppm asks what ±20ppm means, and a female clerk shows on a memo pad that at 16MHz it can be off by up to ±320Hz

Figure description: A customer holds a crystal bag with a ‘16.000MHz ±20ppm’ label and asks, “What does ±20ppm mean?” A female clerk writes ‘16,000,000 × 20 ÷ 1,000,000 = 320Hz’ on a memo pad and answers, “At 16MHz, it means it can be off by up to ±320Hz!”

4. Load capacitance (CL) — crystals only

Part numberStandard load capacitanceWhen ordering
ABM818.0pFSpecify other values in pF (min. 6pF)
ABLS—8~33pF or S (series)
AB26T12.5pFSpecify in pF (e.g. 6pF)

A crystal produces its rated frequency together with the capacitors on the circuit side. That reference value is the load capacitance (CL), written in pF in the ordering part number. Even at the same 16MHz, a CL that doesn’t match the circuit shifts the frequency slightly, so always check the original part’s CL when substituting. An oscillator has its oscillator circuit built in, so you don’t choose a CL.

Field order: ABM8[height] - frequency - load capacitance - ESR - [temperature][tolerance][stability] - packaging · a field is left blank if standard

The ABM8 part number runs series - frequency - load capacitance - ESR - temperature·tolerance·stability - packaging, and fields with standard specs are left blank. In the example above, load capacitance (18pF), ESR and stability (±50ppm) are standard, so they are omitted. The option letters are as in the tables below (— means left blank (standard)).

A digit right after the name ABM8 is the height — blank = 0.80mm max, 1 = 0.65mm, 2 = 0.60mm. If you specify ESR separately, write R plus the Ω value, like R40.

6. Oscillator part number (ASFL1)

For the ASFL1 oscillator, temperature, stability and duty (Symmetry) letters follow the frequency, and packaging comes last. Its part number looks similar to the ABM8 crystal’s, but the same letters have different meanings, so be sure to check section 8.

7. Size and shape

Ceramic SMD (4 pads)5.0 × 3.2 × 1.3mmABM3 · ASFL1
HC-49/US SMD11.4 × 4.7 × 4.2mmABLS
Cylindrical (for clocks)Diameter 2.1 × length 6.2mmAB26T

Small ceramic SMDs are often referred to by their length × width (3.2 × 2.5mm, 5.0 × 3.2mm). Even at the same size, pad functions differ depending on whether the part is a crystal or an oscillator, so don’t substitute based on size alone. Option letters are defined separately for each series — read a part number using that series’ datasheet table
  • Crystal ≠ oscillator — even with the same frequency, terminal count and power differ, so they can’t be swapped
  • 32.768 is kHz — other numbers are usually MHz
  • Tolerance ≠ stability — the 25℃ value vs. the full-temperature-range value
  • Load capacitance — a crystal gives an accurate frequency only when its CL matches the circuit
  • Option letters — even within Abracon, letters mean different things for crystals and oscillators

9. What to check when substituting

  • Type — crystal or oscillator
  • Frequency — including the unit (MHz · kHz)
  • Load capacitance (CL) — for a crystal, the same pF as the original part
  • ppm — tolerance and stability no worse than the original part
  • Operating temperature — check the option letter in that series’ table
  • Supply voltage — for an oscillator, whether it matches the circuit supply, e.g. 3.3V
  • Size · pad layout — even at the same size, whether the pad functions are the same
