Illustration: A customer holds a parts reel (LM358DR) and a long tube (LM358P) and asks, “They're both LM358, so they're the same, right?” A female clerk in a red apron answers, “The chip is the same, but the suffix is different. DR is an SMD reel, P is a through-hole DIP!”
TI (Texas Instruments) parts come with many orderable part number suffixes, even for the same chip. LM358 alone splits into LM358DR · LM358P · LM358PWR · LM358DGKR. The suffix mostly means the package (body shape) and the packing (reel · tube). Misread it and you may receive parts that do not fit your board, or get a quote for a part number that is already obsolete.
This article is based only on the PACKAGE OPTION ADDENDUM (orderable part table) at the end of TI datasheets and other official TI documents. Table values are as of the versions downloaded on 2026-11-03.
Other TI parts mostly follow the same order: base part number → (accuracy · temperature grade) → package designator → packing letter → (legacy lead-free mark · automotive -Q1). However, grade and temperature letters mean different things for each part (section 5), so reading the package designator and packing letter first is the most reliable.
| Orderable part number | Base part number | Package | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|
| LM358DR | LM358 | D = SOIC, 8 pins | R = reel, 2,500 pcs |
| LM358P | LM358 | P = PDIP, 8 pins (through-hole DIP) | none = tube, 50 pcs |
| LM358PWR | LM358 | PW = TSSOP, 8 pins | R = reel, 2,000 pcs |
| NE555DR | NE555 | D = SOIC, 8 pins | R = reel, 2,500 pcs |
| SN74HC00N | SN74HC00 | N = PDIP, 14 pins | none = tube, 25 pcs |
| TLV9001IDBVR | TLV9001 + I (temperature) | DBV = SOT-23, 5 pins | R = reel, 3,000 pcs |
| Suffix | Packing | Examples (TI table values) |
|---|---|---|
| R | Large tape and reel (LARGE T&R) | TL431AIDBZR 3,000 pcs · LM358DR 2,500 pcs |
| T | Small-quantity tape and reel (SMALL T&R) | TL431AIDBZT 250 pcs · TLV9002IDGKT 250 pcs |
| None | Tube (TUBE) | NE555P 50 pcs · TL431ACD 75 pcs |
The TI Logic Guide (SDYU001AC, Appendix C) states “[none] : Tube, T : Small Tape & Reel, R : Large Tape & Reel”. Table 8-1 of the TLV755P datasheet likewise explains R = 3,000-piece reel and T = 250 pieces.
TI's packing table (PACKAGE MATERIALS INFORMATION) shows that TL431AIDBZR (3,000 pcs) and TL431AIDBZT (250 pcs) both use 180mm reels, and TLV9002IDGKR (2,500 pcs) and IDGKT (250 pcs) both use 330mm. For prototypes or small production runs, look for the T part number.
LM358D · NE555D · SN74HC00D · INA219AID are Obsolete in the TI table, while only LM358DR · NE555DR · SN74HC00DR · INA219AIDR with an R at the end are Active. Conversely, TL431ACD (tube of 75) is still active. It differs by part number, so always check the Status column.
The 1–3 letters before R · T are the package designator. TI datasheet tables list it together with the package name, as in “SOT-23 (DBV)”.
| Designator | Package | Pin count (examples) |
|---|---|---|
| D | SOIC | 8 · 14 · 16 (LM358DR · SN74HC00DR · ULN2003ADR) |
| P | PDIP (through-hole DIP) | 8 (NE555P · LM358P) |
| N | PDIP (through-hole DIP) | 14 · 16 (SN74HC00N · ULN2003AN) |
| PW | TSSOP | 8 · 14 · 16 (LM358PWR · SN74HC00PWR) |
| PS | SO (wider body than SOIC) | 8 (NE555PSR · LM358PSR) |
| NS | SOP | 14 · 16 (SN74HC00NSR · ULN2003ANSR) |
| DGK | VSSOP | 8 (LM358DGKR · TLV9002IDGKR) |
| DBV | SOT-23 | 5 · 6 (TLV9001IDBVR · TLV75533PDBVR) |
| DBZ | SOT-23 | 3 (TL431AIDBZR) |
| DCK | SC70 | 5 · 6 (TLV9001IDCKR) |
| DCY | SOT-223 | 4 (LM317DCYR) |
| KCS | TO-220 | 3 (LM317KCS) |
| KTT | DDPAK / TO-263 | 3 (LM317KTTR) |
| LP | TO-92 | 3 (TL431ACLP) |
| PK | SOT-89 | 3 (TL431CPK) |
| DSG · DRV | WSON | 8 · 6 |
| DQN | X2SON | 4 (TLV75533PDQNR) |
| RGT | VQFN | 16 |
D is used for 8-, 14- and 16-pin SOIC alike. Conversely, even within SOT-23 the designator differs: DBZ for 3 pins, DBV for 5 · 6 pins and DCN for 8 pins (INA219). PDIP is P for 8 pins and N for 14 · 16 pins. Check the pin count in the Pins column of the datasheet table.
Illustration: A customer hands over an order sheet listing NE555P and NE555PW and says, “They differ by one letter, so just send either one.” A female clerk in a red apron holds a long-legged DIP chip in one hand and a tiny SMD chip on the fingertip of the other, answering, “P is a through-hole DIP, PW is a tiny TSSOP!”
| Part number | Package | Shape | TI table values |
|---|---|---|---|
| NE555P | P = PDIP, 8 pins | DIP with legs inserted into board holes | Tube of 50 · active |
| NE555DR | D = SOIC, 8 pins | Surface mount (SMD) | Reel of 2,500 · active |
| NE555PSR | PS = SO, 8 pins | SMD, wider body than SOIC | Reel of 2,000 · active |
| NE555PWR | PW = TSSOP, 8 pins | SMD, smallest and thinnest | Reel of 2,000 · active |
P and PW differ by one letter, but one is a through-hole DIP and the other a tiny SMD — completely different parts. PS (SO, about 6.2×7.8mm) also has a different body size from D (SOIC, about 4.9×6mm) and will not fit the same footprint (package table on page 1 of the LM358 datasheet).
If an RFQ comes with only the base part number such as ‘NE555’, it is best to first ask whether DIP or SMD, and reel or tube.
| Part number | Letter | Meaning (per that part's datasheet) |
|---|---|---|
| TL431BIDR | B · A · blank | Initial accuracy B = 0.5%, A = 1%, blank = 2% |
| INA219BIDR | A · B | Two grades, B is more accurate (0.5% max) |
| TL431AIDBZR | I | −40~85℃ (C = 0~70℃, Q = −40~125℃) |
| TLV9001IDBVR | I | −40 to 125℃ — the same I differs from TL431 |
| ULN2003AIDR | I | −40 to 105℃ (ULN2003ADR is −40 to 70℃) |
| SA555DR | NE · SA · NA · SE | The leading letters are the temperature: NE 0 to 70 · SA −40 to 85 · NA −40 to 105 · SE −55 to 125℃ |
TI has no rule like ‘I = a certain temperature’ that applies to every part. Check temperature and accuracy letters in the Op temp column and specifications of that part's datasheet.
The leading digits of 74-series logic ICs appear in the Logic Guide as “xx74 – Catalog, xx54 – Military”. SN74HC00 is the general-purpose part and SN54HC00J is the −55 to 125℃ military version (ceramic CDIP). For logic part numbers in detail, see the 74 logic IC article under ‘Related articles’ below.
The TI table says “Automotive - Q100 devices qualified for high-reliability automotive applications targeting zero defects”, and the Logic Guide lists “Q1 : Automotive (AEC-Q100)”.
| Orderable part number | Reading | TI table values |
|---|---|---|
| LM2904QDRQ1 | LM2904 + Q (−40 to 125℃) + D (SOIC) + R (reel) + Q1 (automotive) | SOIC 8 pins · reel of 2,500 |
| TLV9002QDRQ1 | TLV9002 + Q + D + R + Q1 | SOIC 8 pins · reel of 2,500 |
| TLV9001QDBVRQ1 | TLV9001 + Q + DBV + R + Q1 | SOT-23 5 pins · reel of 3,000 |
Automotive part numbers contain both a Q in the middle (temperature) and Q1 at the end (automotive qualification). The standard part (LM2904DR) and the automotive part (LM2904QDRQ1) even have separate datasheets, so for automotive · electronics customers, check that the part number carries Q1. TI's product life cycle page also lists -EP (Enhanced Product) and -HT (high temperature).
The TL431 datasheet calls G3 · G4 · E3 · E4 a “Legacy Designator” (a mark used in the past) and explains it was “used to differentiate Pb-free and Green devices”.
| Letter | Meaning (TI documents) |
|---|---|
| E3 | Lead-free with tin (Sn) plating |
| E4 | Lead-free with nickel · palladium · gold (NiPdAu) pre-plating |
| G4 · G3 | E4 · E3 that also meet TI's ‘Green’ (low halogen · antimony) criteria — “e4 becomes G4” |
LM358P and LM358PE4 are both PDIP tubes of 50 · active. However, LM358DR is active while LM358DRG4 is obsolete, and NE555DRG4 is obsolete while NE555DR1G4 is active. Even with the same package and quantity, each orderable part number has its own status, so look up the exact quoted part number in the table.
| Marking | Meaning (TI product life cycle page) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Active | In production, available to buy | LM358DR · NE555P |
| NRND | Sold for existing designs, alternatives recommended for new designs | LM317KCS (TO-220) |
| Last Time Buy | Being discontinued — final ordering period | SN74HC00DBR |
| Obsolete | Production ended | LM358D · NE555D |
| Preview | Pre-production (samples) |
Even obsolete part numbers often still have stock at domestic distributors. In that case, look for stock with eGuro Part Search, or suggest an active orderable part number of the same chip (e.g. LM358D → LM358DR).
| Orderable part number | Top-side marking (TI table Part marking) |
|---|---|
| LM358DR | LM358 |
| LM358PWR | L358 |
| NE555PWR | N555 |
| SN74HC00DR | HC00 |
| TLV9001IDBVR | 1OGF |
| INA219AIDCNR | A219 |
Small packages carry only a short code on top. A footnote in the TI table says only one of the markings in parentheses is printed, and a logo · lot number may be added. That is why you cannot tell R · T · G4 from the top of the chip alone. Check the actual parts by the orderable part number on the reel · tube label.
The PACKAGE OPTION ADDENDUM → PACKAGING INFORMATION table at the very end of a TI datasheet lists each orderable part number on its own row.
| Column name | What to check |
|---|---|
| Orderable part number | Orderable part number (matches the quoted part number letter for letter?) |
| Status | Active · NRND · Last Time Buy · Obsolete |
