Illustration: A customer says, “I'd like some Diodes diodes!” A female staff member in a red apron points to a reel printed with the Diodes logo and answers, “Diodes is a company name. They make transistors and ICs too. Please tell me the part number!”
Diodes Incorporated (Diodes for short) is a semiconductor company headquartered in Plano, Texas, USA. Because the company name is the same as the word “diode,” it is easy to confuse, but the company makes not only diodes but also transistors, MOSFETs, power ICs, logic ICs and Hall sensors. In Guro we often see part numbers like BAV99-7-F · MMBT3904-7-F · DMN3404L-7 · AP2112K-3.3TRG1.
This post explains how to read the part number suffixes (-7 · -13 · -F · Q · TRG1, etc.), following the Ordering Information tables in Diodes datasheets and official documents on diodes.com.
All values were checked against official diodes.com documents (17 datasheets, the Product Definitions page and the AP02007 packaging specification); text in English quotation marks is the original wording. Marking codes printed on diode bodies (A7 · KJE, etc.) are covered in the SMD marking code post (124).
If the manufacturer field of a quote or stock list says Diodes, DIODES, Diodes Inc. or DIODES INC, it always means this company. "Diodes" in the manufacturer field does not mean the part is a diode, so the part on that line may be a transistor (MMBT3904), a MOSFET (DMN3404L) or an LDO (AP2112). Conversely, “diode” in the part name field describes the part type and does not mean it is a Diodes product.
| Diodes Incorporated (company) | Diode (part type) | |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Name of a US semiconductor company | A part that lets current flow in one direction only |
| Where it appears | Manufacturer field · logo · datasheet header | Part type field · datasheet title |
| Example | BAV99-7-F · MMBT3904-7-F · AP2112K-3.3TRG1 | 1N4148 · S1M · BZT52C5V1 |
The diodes.com company profile says “Diodes Incorporated delivers advanced analog and power semiconductor solutions to the world's leading technology companies”, and the headquarters is in “Plano, Texas, United States”. Its wafer fabs are in Shanghai and Wuxi (China), Oldham (England), Greenock (Scotland), Hsinchu (Taiwan) and Maine (USA); its assembly and test facilities are in Shanghai, Chengdu and Wuxi (China), Germany and Taiwan; and in Korea it has a sales office in Seongnam.
| Ordering part number (BAV99 datasheet) | Package | Packing |
|---|---|---|
| BAV99-7-F | SOT23 | 3,000 pcs tape & reel |
| BAV99-13-F | SOT23 | 10,000 pcs tape & reel |
| BAV99Q-7-F | SOT23 | 3,000 pcs tape & reel |
| BAV99Q-13-F | SOT23 | 10,000 pcs tape & reel |
The format is the part name (BAV99), followed by Q (automotive), then a reel code after a hyphen (-7 · -13), with -F at the very end. The Diodes packaging specification (AP02007) only says of -F “Part number suffixes may be followed by other characters, e.g. -7-F, -13-F, etc.”, and official documents do not give the letter's meaning. The notes on tables with -F explain RoHS · Green (halogen-free), so it appears to denote a lead-free · Green version, but this is a guess.
Illustration: A customer holds a small reel (MMBT3904-7-F) and a large reel (MMBT3904-13-F) and asks, “Are these two different parts?” A female staff member answers, “They're the same part. -7 is a 7-inch reel of 3,000 pcs, and -13 is a 13-inch reel of 10,000 pcs!”
| Ordering part number (MMBT3904 datasheet) | Marking code | Reel size | Tape width | Quantity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MMBT3904-7-F | K1N | 7-inch | 8mm | 3,000 pcs |
| MMBT3904-13-F | K1N | 13-inch | 8mm | 10,000 pcs |
The MMBT3904 datasheet table lists -7 = 7-inch reel, -13 = 13-inch reel side by side. The marking code is K1N for both, so the chip is the same and only the packing differs. The table headers in the Diodes packaging specification (AP02007) are also “7" Tape and Reel: Quantity, Part Number Suffix” · “13" Tape and Reel: Quantity, Part Number Suffix”.
| Package (AP02007) | 7-inch reel qty | 7-inch suffix | 13-inch reel qty | 13-inch suffix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SOT23 | 3,000 | -7, TA | 10,000 | -13 |
| SOT25 · SOT26 | 3,000 | -7, TA | 10,000 | -13, TC |
| SOD123 · SOD123F · SOD323 | 3,000 | -7, TA | 10,000 | -13, TC |
| SOD523 | 3,000 (6,000 = -76K) | -7, TA | 10,000 | -13 |
| SMA | None | - | 5,000 | -13 |
| SMB · SMC | None | - | 3,000 | -13 |
| SOT89 | 1,000 | -7, TA, -7R | 2,500 / 4,000 | -13 / TC, -13R |
| SOT223 | 1,000 | -7, TA | 2,500 / 4,000 | -13 / TC |
| PowerDI5 | 1,500 | -7, -7D | 5,000 | -13, -13D |
| TO252 | None | - | 2,500 | -13, TC |
AP02007 note: the quantity is “minimum packing quantity only, not minimum order quantity” — it is the minimum packing quantity, not the minimum order quantity. -7D · -13D are 12mm tape for PowerDI5, and -76K is a 7-inch reel of 6,000 pcs for SOD523.
The Product Definitions page on diodes.com states “Automotive-grade products are products with a Q suffix that have passed the rigorous AECQ reliability standard AND that can be supplied on request with a PPAP.” In other words, part numbers with Q have passed AEC-Q reliability testing, come with a PPAP (Production Part Approval Process documentation) on request, and are made in IATF 16949-certified factories.
| No Q (Standard · Commercial) | With Q (Automotive) | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | DMN3404L-7 | DMN3404LQ-7 |
| Meaning | Made under Diodes' standard quality control | AEC-Q passed + PPAP + IATF 16949 factory |
| Electrical characteristics | Same | Same (“the same, except where specified”) |
A note in the MMBTA92 datasheet says “Automotive, AEC-Q101 and standard products are electrically and thermally the same, except where specified.” However, in this table MMBTA92-7-F, which has no Q, is also listed as “AEC-Q101,” so being AEC-Q101 does not mean it is always a Q part number. The key point of Q is PPAP and change control.
For parts such as MMBT3904 · DMG2302U · SBR10U45SP5 that say “An automotive-compliant part is available under separate datasheet”, the Q part number (MMBT3904Q, etc.) is in a separate datasheet. The absence of a Q row in the standard product table does not mean there is no Q part number.
| Ordering part number | Package | 13-inch reel qty | Basis (datasheet original) |
|---|---|---|---|
| B120-13-F | SMA | 5,000 pcs | “B120-13-F (SMA Package)” |
| B120B-13-F | SMB | 3,000 pcs | “B120B-13-F (SMB Package)” |
| S1M-13-F | SMA | 5,000 pcs | “S1A-13-F (SMA package)” |
| S1MB-13-F | SMB | 3,000 pcs | “S1AB-13-F (SMB package)” |
The 1A Schottky B120–B160 and 1A rectifier S1A–S1M share their electrical specs in one datasheet each, but a B after the number means the SMB package, and no B means SMA. Their size and pads differ, so they are not interchangeable. These two series come only on -13 reels, with no -7 (AP02007 also lists 7-inch reels as “none” for SMA · SMB). The header of the old DL4001–DL4007 datasheet says “PART OBSOLETE / USE S1A-S1M Series”.
| Ordering part number | Grade | Package | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMN3404L-7 | Standard | SOT23 | 3,000 pcs reel |
| DMN3404LQ-7 | Automotive | SOT23 | 3,000 pcs reel |
| DMP2305U-7 | Standard | SOT23 | 3,000 pcs reel |
| SBR10U45SP5-13 | - | PowerDI5 | 5,000 pcs reel |
MOSFETs (DMN · DMP · DMG) and SBR rectifier diodes have no -F after -7 · -13. The DMN3404L datasheet title is “N-CHANNEL ENHANCEMENT MODE MOSFET”, and DMP2305U's is “P-CHANNEL ENHANCEMENT MODE MOSFET”. We could not find an official document giving the meaning of prefixes such as DMN · DMP · SBR.
In some cases, such as the BZT52C…T (SOD523) Zener datasheet, standard parts use -7 and automotive parts use Q-7-F within the same table, so follow the exact spelling of -F in the datasheet table.
Power ICs from the former BCD lines follow completely different rules from small discretes. Instead of a reel-size number (-7), they use TR (Tape & Reel), followed at the end by G1 (“G1 : Green”) or E1 (“E1 : RoHS Compliant”).
| Ordering part number | Meaning | Packing |
|---|---|---|
| AZ1117CH-3.3TRG1 | SOT223 · 3.3V · reel · Green | 4,000 pcs reel |
| AZ1117CD-3.3TRG1 | TO252 · 3.3V · reel · Green | 2,500 pcs reel |
| AZ1117CD-3.3G1 | TO252 · 3.3V · No TR = tube | 80 pcs tube |
| AZ1117H-3.3TRE1 | Old AZ1117 · E1 = RoHS only (not recommended for new designs) | 4,000 pcs reel |
| AP3012KTR-G1 | SOT-23-5 · reel · Green (hyphen after TR) | 3,000 pcs reel |
| AP3012KTR-E1 | Same chip · RoHS only, marking E6B (G1 is G6B) | 3,000 pcs reel |
The AZ1117C ordering diagram says “Blank : Tube”, so without TR it is tube packing. The header of the old AZ1117 datasheet says “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW DESIGN / USE AZ1117C or AZ1117I”. In AP2112 the hyphen comes after the package (K-3.3), while in AP3012 it comes after TR (KTR-G1), so the hyphen position also differs by series.
| Ordering part number (74LVC1G08) | Package letters | Package | 7-inch reel qty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 74LVC1G08W5-7 | W5 | SOT25 | 3,000 pcs |
| 74LVC1G08SE-7 | SE | SOT353 | 3,000 pcs |
| 74LVC1G08Z-7 | Z | SOT553 | 4,000 pcs |
| 74LVC1G08FW4-7 | FW4 | X2-DFN1010-6 | 5,000 pcs |
Logic ICs use the -7 suffix again (“-7 : 7" Tape & Reel”). Even with the same -7, the quantity differs by package: 3,000, 4,000 or 5,000 pcs.
| Ordering part number (AH3572 Hall sensor) | Package | Packing | Lead shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| AH3572-P-A | SIP-3 | Ammo box, 4,000 pcs | Spread leads (“Spread Lead”) |
| AH3572-P-B | SIP-3 | Bulk, 1,000 pcs | Straight leads (“Straight Lead”) |
| AH3572-SA-7 | SOT23 | 7-inch reel, 3,000 pcs | - |
For the AH3572 Hall sensor, -A · -B differ not only in packing but also in lead shape. The header of the AH3572 datasheet says “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW DESIGN / USE AH3522”.
