Nexperia transistor · diode · small-signal MOSFET part numbers such as BC847B,215 · BAV99W · BZX84-C5V1-QR · 2N7002BK are short, but a single trailing letter separates hFE grade · voltage tolerance · package · reel size · automotive or not. This post explains those meanings using only Nexperia datasheets, packing information and the order tables on product pages.
Illustration: A customer holds two sheets of paper, one in each hand. One says NXP and the other says Nexperia, and both say BC847. When the customer asks, “The companies are different, so are these different parts?”, a female staff member in a red apron answers, “In 2017, NXP's general-purpose parts division was spun off as Nexperia. The part number stays the same!”
The old datasheets Nexperia still hosts (BSS84 · 2N7002) open with the notice “On 7 February 2017 the former NXP Standard Product business became a new company with the tradename Nexperia.” In other words, NXP's general-purpose parts division (Standard Products) was spun off on 7 February 2017 as a new company named Nexperia.
The same notice says to read datasheets that still carry NXP · Philips branding as Nexperia. In fact, the BSS84 datasheet (Rev.06, 2008) downloaded from the Nexperia site still says NXP Semiconductors · © NXP in the body. So for the same BC847, NXP and Nexperia versions of the datasheet circulate side by side. The part number is unchanged, so pick the latest version by its revision (Rev.) and date rather than by the company name.
In this post, [Inferred] marks what we read by cross-checking several official documents, and [Trend] marks a rule that holds for several examples but that Nexperia has not written down as a rule.
| Prefix | Example | Type stated in the datasheet |
|---|---|---|
| BC | BC847B · BC857 | General-purpose transistor (NPN · PNP) |
| BAV · BAS | BAV99 · BAS16 | High-speed switching diode |
| BZX · PDZ | BZX84-C5V1 · PDZ5.1B | Zener diode |
| PMEG | PMEG3010EJ | Schottky rectifier diode |
| PESD | PESD5V0S1BL | ESD protection diode |
| 2N7002 · NX · BSS · PMV | 2N7002 · BSS84 · PMV16XN | Small-signal MOSFET (N · P-channel) |
| BUK | BUK7Y12-55B | Automotive power MOSFET |
The ‘Type’ column is the product description on the first line of each datasheet. Nexperia datasheets don't explain what each letter such as BC · BA · BZ means, so this post does not decode them.
[Trend] The four digits after PMEG fit first two = voltage, last two = current — PMEG2005EH 20V · 0.5A, PMEG3010EJ 30V · 1A, PMEG4010CEH 40V · 1A.
[Trend] The 5V0 in PESD5V0S1BL matches the datasheet's VRWM (reverse standoff voltage — the voltage that can be applied continuously) of 5V.
There is no rule document, so always confirm with the tables in that part's datasheet before quoting.
Transistors: The BC847 series datasheet (BC847X_SER Rev.13) splits hFE (DC current gain) at VCE 5V · IC 2mA like this.
BC847 with no letter covers the full 110~800 range, so there is no telling which grade you will get. If the circuit cares about hFE, ship the matching A · B · C. Even within the same datasheet family, BC846 only comes in A · B (BC846_SER).
Zener: The BZX84 series is “E24 ±1 % (BZX84-A), ±2 % (BZX84-B) and approximately ±5 % (BZX84-C)”. The voltage is written with V in place of the decimal point.
Other makers often write it without the hyphen as BZX84C5V1. Even with the same standard name, marking codes · test conditions differ from one maker's datasheet to another, so write Nexperia part numbers exactly as they are, hyphen included.
Nexperia's other Zener, PDZ5.1B, uses a dot instead of V, and the whole PDZ-B series is “Tolerance approximately ± 2 %”. Even when the letter B is the same, check the tolerance stated for each series.
| Part number | Package | Other names |
|---|---|---|
| BAV99 | SOT23 (2 diodes) | TO-236AB |
| BAV99W | SOT323 (2 diodes) | SC-70 |
| BAV99S | SOT363 (4 diodes) | SC-88 |
| BC846 | SOT23 | TO-236AB |
| BC846W | SOT323 | SC-70 |
| BC846T | SOT416 | SC-75 |
This is straight from the product tables in the BAV99 series · BC846 series datasheets. In these families, W after the name is SOT323 and T is SOT416. [Inferred] However, the same letter, such as S, can mean something else in another series — BC847BS is a part with two transistors in SOT363. Don't decide from the letter alone; check the Ordering information in that part's datasheet.
The datasheet packing table states “The indicated -xxx are the last three digits of the 12NC ordering code.” 12NC is Nexperia's 12-digit sales number (BC847B,215 = 933589590215), and the last three digits are the packing method. On the product page order table, the same part number splits like this.
| 12NC ending | New order part number ending | Reel (diameter) | Quantity (this package) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 215 SOT23 | R | 7-inch (180mm) | 3,000 |
| 235 SOT23 | VL | 11-inch (286mm) | 10,000 |
| 115 SOT323 | X · AX | 7-inch (180mm) | 3,000 |
| 135 SOT323 | F | 11-inch (286mm) | 10,000 |
In Nexperia's packing information documents (SOT23_215 · SOT23_235 · SOT323_115 · SOT323_135), the ‘Orderable part number ending’ column says “215 or R” · “235 or VL” · “115 or X or AX” · “135 or F” (SOD882_315 is “315 or YL”). The reel diameter is the d (diameter) value in the document's table (180 · 286mm), and the quantity is the value for that package. For the same package, the 7-inch · 11-inch reels also have the same part orientation in the tape (Q3/T4 for SOT23).
| Old style (comma) | New style (letters) |
|---|---|
| 2N7002BK,215 | 2N7002BKVL (235 · 10,000 pcs) |
| BC847B,215 | BC847B-QR (automotive, 215 · 3,000 pcs) |
| BAV99,235 | BAV99-QVL (automotive, 235 · 10,000 pcs) |
| - | PMV16XNR (215 · 3,000 pcs) |
Product pages list both comma part numbers (2N7002BK,215) and letter part numbers (2N7002BKVL). [Inferred] Newer part numbers tend to attach the ending letters directly instead of using a comma, and automotive -Q parts come out as -QR · -QVL from the start. If the last three 12NC digits are the same, the packing is the same.
Actual packing by ending number — grouped by reel size — We downloaded the 49 packing information documents linked from Nexperia package pages (small-signal, logic and power packages) and sorted them by reel size. The letters in brackets are the new orderable part number endings, and the inch values are the reel diameters in the document tables. The first row of each group is the most common standard packing; the rows below show what differs on a reel of the same size.
■ 7-inch reel (180mm diameter) — small reel, the most common
| Suffix | Difference | Example packages |
|---|---|---|
| 215 (R) | Base | SOT23 |
| 115 (X) | Base | SOT323 · SOT363 · SOT457 · SOD323 · SOD123F · SOT223 · SOT89 · LFPAK56 · SO8 · SO20 |
| 315 (YL) | 2mm pocket pitch (very small parts) | SOD882 |
| 125 (H) | Pin 1 orientation differs from 115 | SOT363 · SOT457 |
| 146 · 147 (Z) | Pin 1 orientation differs from 115 | SOT89 |
| 515 (Z) | Dry pack (moisture-proof) | SO8 |
| 185 (Z) | Box of 10 reels | SOT23 |
| 145 (Z) | Box of 10 reels | SOD323 |
■ 11-inch reel (286mm diameter) — large reel (small packages)
| Suffix | Difference | Example packages |
|---|---|---|
| 235 (VL) | Base | SOT23 |
| 135 (F) | Base | SOT323 · SOT363 · SOT457 · SOD323 |
| 165 (Z) | Pin 1 orientation differs from 135 | SOT363 · SOT457 |
■ 13-inch reel (330mm diameter) — large reel (IC and power packages)
| Suffix | Difference | Example packages |
|---|---|---|
| 118 (J) | Base | SO8 · SO14 · SO20 · TSSOP14 · DPAK · D2PAK |
| 135 (F) | Standard — the same 135 is 13-inch for these packages | SOT223 · SOT89 |
| 653 (HL) · 623 (XP) | Same 13-inch reel as 118 (only the order number differs) | SO14 · SO20 · TSSOP14 |
| 139 · 013 (Z) | Pin 1 orientation differs from 118 | SO14 |
| 518 (Y) | Dry pack for SO20 | SO8 · SO20 |
| 346 (Z) | Dry pack | SOT223 |
| 431 (Z) | Sulfur barrier packing | SO8 · SO14 |
■ Tube — a stick-shaped container, not a reel
| Suffix | Quantity | Example packages |
|---|---|---|
| 112 (U) · 652 (JL) | 57 per tube | SO14 |
| 127 | 50 per tube | TO-220 (SOT78) |
Document names and values are exactly as in the Nexperia packing information documents (e.g. SOT23_235 · SOT223_135 · SOT108-1_112). The SOT23 “large reel” 235 is 286mm, i.e. 11-inch; even with the same 135, SOT323 and similar use 286mm (11-inch) while SOT223 · SOT89 use 330mm (13-inch). The new ending Z is shared by many packings such as 185 · 145 · 146 · 147 · 165 · 139 · 515 · 346 · 431, so Z alone does not tell you the packing.
[Inferred] In the table above, when the last two digits are 15 (115 · 215 · 315 · 515) it is always a 7-inch reel, and when they are 18 (118 · 518) it is always a 13-inch reel. 125 · 146 · 147 · 139, which differ in the first digit, use the same reel size with a different pin 1 orientation, and 515 · 346 · 431 differ in packing method such as moisture or sulfur protection.
Counter-examples — Last two digits 35 mean a large reel, but its size depends on the package (135: 11-inch for SOT323, 13-inch for SOT223 · SOT89). Tubes also end differently: 112 · 652 for SO14, 127 for TO-220. No Nexperia document explains what each digit of the three-digit suffix means.
Nexperia keeps one packing information document for each “package + three-digit suffix” (SOT23_215 · SOT323_115 · SOT669_115 · SOD882_315 …). Each document fixes the reel diameter · tape width · pitch · pin 1 orientation in the tape · quantity. Even on the same 7-inch reel, the quantity differs like this.
| Part number (package) | Reel · tape | Pitch | Quantity |
|---|---|---|---|
| BC847B,215 SOT23 | 7-inch · 8mm | 4mm | 3,000 |
| BAV99W,115 SOT323 | 7-inch · 8mm | 4mm | 3,000 |
| BUK7Y12-55B,115 LFPAK56 | 7-inch · 12mm | 8mm | 1,500 |
| PESD5V0S1BL,315 SOD882 | 7-inch · 8mm | 2mm | 10,000 |
Even with the same reel diameter, a large part needs wider tape and a longer pitch so fewer fit (LFPAK56 1,500 pcs), while a very small part has a short pitch so more fit (SOD882 10,000 pcs). The footnote in the packing information documents also says “Packing quantity dependent on specific product type.”
Pin 1 orientation also differs: Q3/T4 for SOT23 · SOT323, Q2/T3 for SOT363, Q1/T1 for LFPAK56. So don’t memorize the suffix alone like “115 = 3,000 pcs”; read it together with the package, and check the quantity in that part’s order table.
| Nexperia | Other names | Body size (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| SOT23 | TO-236AB | 2.9 × 1.3 × 1 |
| SOT323 | SC-70 | 2 × 1.25 × 0.95 |
| SOT416 | SC-75 | - |
| SOT363 | SC-88 · TSSOP6 | - |
| SOD323 | SC-76 | 1.7 × 1.25 × 0.95 |
| SOD882 | DFN1006-2 | 1 × 0.6 × 0.48 |
| SOT669 | LFPAK | - |
The names and sizes are the values given in Nexperia datasheets' Ordering information and package information documents. Nexperia uses its own SOT · SOD package numbers first and lists the JEDEC (TO-236AB) · JEITA (SC-70) names alongside. When comparing with other makers' part numbers, match them using these pairs. If the package sizes are unfamiliar, see the package post.

New datasheets write “% = placeholder for manufacturing site code”, and older versions write * in the same place. On the actual chip, a manufacturing site letter is printed instead of %. The BSS84 datasheet (2008) explains that letter as “- / p: made in Hong Kong, t: made in Malaysia, W: made in China”. Depending on the part, the position can be at the front (%BZ) or the back (12%). Some parts, like PMEG3010EJ (AK) · PESD5V0S1BL (F1), have no site position at all.
How to read marking codes, and how codes differ between makers, is covered in detail in the SMD marking code post.

Nexperia adds -Q to the end of the name for automotive small-signal parts. The BAV99-Q · BAS16-Q · BZX84-C5V1-Q datasheets state “Qualified according to AEC-Q101 and recommended for use in automotive applications”. AEC-Q101 is the reliability qualification standard for automotive discrete semiconductors.
| Standard | Automotive | Marking code |
|---|---|---|
| BAV99,215 | BAV99-QR | A7% (same) |
| BC847B,215 | BC847B-QR | 1F% (same) |
| BZX84-C5V1,215 | BZX84-C5V1-QR | Z2% (same) |
The revision history of BC847X_SER Rev.13 (2022-07-01) includes “Product(s) changed to non-automotive qualification. Please refer to nexperia.com for automotive (-Q) product alternative(s).” A customer who used BC847B for automotive based on the old version now needs to look for the BC847B-Q family.
Also, as in the table above, the standard and -Q versions have the same chip marking. You can't tell whether it is automotive from the chip alone, so check the part number on the reel label.
Conversely, some parts are AEC-Q101 even without -Q in the name — the 2N7002BK · 2N7002P · BSS138BK datasheets state “AEC-Q101 qualified”.
For power MOSFETs starting with BUK (BUK7Y12-55B · BUK7K6R2-40E), the datasheets say they were designed · qualified for AEC Q101 automotive use from the start. Both of these are ‘standard level’ products. We could not find an official explanation of the digits · letters after BUK, so this post does not decode them.
Illustration: A small reel and a large reel sit on the counter, labeled BC847B,215 and BC847B,235. When the customer asks, “The last numbers are different, so they're different parts, right?”, a female staff member in a red apron answers, “What follows the comma is the packing number. The chip is the same — only the reel size and quantity differ!”
① Treating ,215 and ,235 as different parts — As in section 4, what follows the comma is packing. BC847B,215 and BC847B,235 have the same chip and marking (1F%); only the reel size (7-inch · 11-inch) and quantity (3,000 · 10,000 pcs) differ. If the customer wants 3,000 pcs and you only have a 10,000-pc reel, you have to split the reel, so check the quantity unit too.
② Treating everything with 2N7002 in it as the same — All are SOT23 · 60V N-channel, but Nexperia splits them into different part numbers like this.
| Part number | Current (datasheet title) | Difference | Marking |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2N7002 | 300mA | Base | 12% |
| 2N7002P | 360mA | AEC-Q101 | LW% |
| 2N7002BK | 350mA | ESD 2kV · AEC-Q101 | LN% |
| NX7002AK | - | ESD protected | %CM |
The marking codes are all different, so you can tell them apart from the chip alone. Unless the customer says ‘any 2N7002 type will do’, match the suffix exactly when shipping.
③ Treating the same marking as the same part number — BC847B (SOT23, 1 transistor) and BC847BS (SOT363, 2) carry the identical marking 1F%. BAV99 · BAV99W · BAV99-Q are all A7% too. Use the marking code only to narrow down candidates, and check the package size · lead count as well.
④ Discontinued suffixes — The /DG in BSS84/DG is described in the datasheet as “halogen-free”, and on the product page BSS84/DG,215 is Discontinued. Even for the same BSS84, check the status of the suffixed version separately.
