The best-known 3-terminal voltage regulator: feed it a higher voltage and it outputs 5V. Commonly called '7805' or 'LM7805', its ST part number is L7805CV (TO-220). Just connect the three leads to input, GND and output.

Values are from the STMicroelectronics datasheet.
As a linear regulator it dissipates (input − 5V) × current as heat. Drawing 1A from 12V gives about 7W, so a heatsink is essential. As in the datasheet test conditions, place a 0.33µF capacitor on the input and a 0.1µF on the output close to the leads, and keep the load current at 5mA or more. Single gauge (CV) and dual gauge (CV-DG) differ only in heatsink thickness (0.51~0.60mm / 1.23~1.32mm).
